San Severino Marche is a little town that traces its origins to the Paleolithic period although it owes its main development first to the Roman era and then to the Middle Ages. The historic town centre is characterized by the porticoes and spindle shape of the Piazza del Popolo, once considered the salotto buono (drawing room) of the town. Nearby you can visit the Roman-era archaeological site with the remains of the baths, a section of the town wall and two entrance gates. Moving westwards from here you come to the Monti Sibillini National Park, a natural sanctuary which you can explore along the many trails that cross it. On the way back you can stop off at Lake Fiastra to partake in a variety of water sports or go on a boat trip. Proceeding eastward, instead, you leave the high land and in about 40 minutes you get to the Marche coast and popular seaside resorts like Numana, Sirolo and Monte Conero.
