PRIVATE STRUCTURE. Built in the 16th century in the centre of the bay of San Terenzo as a Barnabite monastery, the villa owes its name to the famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley who, describing it as the " white house by the sea ", lived there in 1822 with his wife Mary Shelley, author of the famous book “Frankenstein”. Villa Shelley is an L-shaped building, in brick and finished in white-painted plaster which makes it recognizable from every part of the Gulf as its colour stands out among the rows of Genoese-style colourful houses that surround the beautiful promenade in San Terenzo. One feature that distinguishes the villa at first sight is the five-arched portico which contains the main entrance. Above the portico is a large terrace along the whole façade, overlooking the sea and the beach of San Terenzo, with a 180° panorama stretching from the castle of Lerici to San Terenzo and, on the horizon, to Portovenere with its characteristic church of San Pietro and the islands of Palmaria and Tino. Inside the villa are the original floors in beautiful Genoese grit and high vaulted ceilings; all the rooms of the piano nobile (the principal floor of a large house) have large windows giving a breathtaking view of the sea.
PLEASE NOTE: On the upper floor, reached by an external flight of stairs, there is an apartment that sometimes is occupied. Complete privacy is however guaranteed to guests.
