Location

Caprarola is located on the southeastern slope of the Cimini Mountains surrounded by the green Tuscia Romana not far from Lake Vico, perched on a tufaceous spur, between the consular roads (now state roads) Cassia and Flaminia. It is a slightly-hidden jewel but it offers one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles of Lazio with its hazel groves and beech woods. Together with other 11 municipalities, it is part of the Mountain Community of the Cimini Hills. In the 16th century this characteristic agricultural centre had its moment of greatest splendour when the Farnese family, with Cardinal Alessandro Farnese elected Pope as Paul III and with the constitution of the Duchy of Castro, greatly extended their dominion by building sumptuous villas and castles. At Caprarola the residence most representative of the level of wealth and power that this noble family reached was built: Palazzo Farnese, a masterpiece of the architect Jacopo Barozzi known as Il Vignola, one of the best architectural examples of Mannerism in Lazio. Of great naturalistic interest, located 8 km west of Caprarola, is Lake Vico: the best preserved among the great Italian lakes of volcanic origin and one of the areas of particular naturalistic value of Lazio, it is a habitat of significant vegetational interest where many rare animal species thrive. Thanks to the important production of hazelnuts, Caprarola is known for its traditional hazelnut-based desserts and for the world-renowned hazelnut cream to spread on bread or to garnish desserts. In addition, the centuries-old pastoral tradition favours the production of excellent pecorino cheese, to sample both fresh and seasoned. The Eco Sound Fest in Caprarola, which takes place during the summer, is an event of international attention that combines music with awareness of environmental issues. The geographical location favours excursions to both naturalistic and historical sites: Tuscania (44 km) with the Romanesque splendour of its churches; Civita di Bagnoregio (49 km), a wonderful borgo called “the dying town”; Tarquinia (50 km) with its Etruscan wonders that are reflected in the Tyrrhenian Sea; Canepina (13 km), the borgo that smells of chestnuts; Soriano nel Cimino (19 km) with its tradition of grilled mushrooms and meat specialties; Ronciglione (5 km), a possession of the Farnese family, set on a tufaceous cliff overlooking Lake Vico, with its carnival cavalcade of the Hussars; Vitorchiano (22 km), the borgo of peperino (a brown or grey volcanic tuff); Orte (40 km), an important road and rail junction; Viterbo (20 km), the city of the Popes; Bagnaia (22 km) with Villa Lante, a perfect union of environment and architecture, Renaissance jewel of Tuscia; Calcata (38 km), known as the village of witches, but also of hippies and artists; Castel Sant'Elia (22 km) with the basilica of the same name with its mosaic-decorated floor and the wall decoration of the apse and the transept with a clear Byzantine imprint. Sutri (10 km) with its Roman amphitheatre; Orvieto (72 km) with the intricate marble façade of its cathedral; Rome (60 km), caput mundi.
